Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots, But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of gas-shells dropping softly behind. How do these lines evoke a sense of the time and place in which this poem is set?

it describes what the men are going through. 'Men marched asleep" is saying that it is night out and the rest of it describes war.

    C) The words marched and boots, along with the reference to "gas-shells dropping," indicate that the poem takes place during WWI and is set near a battlefield.

    Have a great day.
