    When he uses the pronoun them, he talks about women.

    He says "Pygmalion had seen them, spending their lives in wickedness, and, offended by the failings that nature gave the female heart, he lived as a bachelor, without a wife or partner for his bed".

    And that is why he decided to create his own partner, he carved a sculpture and he fell in love with it.
