Tom's friends were persuaded by Tom.

    Explanation:

Tom is portrayed as a clever boy who uses his ability to make his friends work for him. When Ben Roger told him that he was going for swimming,

Tom persuaded him saying whitewashing was fun and made him whitewash the fence. Ben's attitude also changed and thought it was fun rather than a job.

Tom next traded the job to Billy Fisher for a kite and then to Johny Miller who gave him a string to swing. Towards noon, Tom had enough to eat and play with but his friends believed whitewashing was fun and completed the work.
