When the first settlers came to New Englad, they quickly realized that large scale cities woulnd't be possible because they could grow enough food to feed them, so they had to settle in smaller towns, the climate and soil wouldn't allow them to grow crops at a large scale, the winters were too cold and the summers too short, and most of the soil was too hard for farming.
