When Marco Polo describes some characteristics about the island itself, as in the sentences: "The people of Japan live 1500 miles from the mainland" " ... live in on an island" and " ... exercise no authority over other nations.", he is mentioning facts about the island and the people. And when he tells about the way the people look, as in the sentence "The people of Japan are good-looking and well-mannered.", he is giving his impression, which is his subjective perspective.
