Why are some conflicts described as "external"?

    An external conflict means that the struggle occurs between the character and something else, like another character. For example, a hero needs to slay a monster = external. An internal conflict means that the character is struggling with themselves. For example, a character having to choose between his dream or duty = internali conflict.
