The poem creates a scary, shivery feeling because the bat and the chipmunk are afraid of the owl. I know this because in the story it said, ""It’s terrible, just terrible! Is there really something like that at night?"

The bat said: "If it weren’t for that hole in the oak he’d have got me."

The chipmunk said in a determined voice: "I’m going to bed earlier. Sometimes when there’re lots of nuts I stay out till it’s pretty dark; but believe me, I’m never going to again."" The bat and the chipmunk were explaining their encounter with the owl. This is how it explains that they are afraid of the owl.
