The Declaration of Independence reflects Enlightenment ideas held by British

subjects in the American Colonies. Below are 2 of the several grievances of the

British subjects.

"For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent."

"For suspending our own Legislatures and declaring themselves invested with

power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever."

    The Enlightenment came around the 18th Century and included a range of ideas centered on reason as the primary source of authority and legitimacy; advancing ideals such as liberty, progress, tolerance, fraternity, constitutional government, and separation of church and state. This quote is a good example as it shows how the thoughts of the people reflected a desire for equality, constitutional governance and liberty.
