What does the simile tells us about the man fear ('like an island of safety in a sea of perils) at that moment

    The simile suggest that the man feels very safe on the island as they are open and spacious but the fact it is surrounded by perils contrast this as perils suggest danger and uncertainty. it is using the language device juxtaposition by taking to words (safety and perils) which are opposites and placing them together for a strong effect.
