The neighborhood is Located in San Fransisco's China Town. Waverly's neighborhood is filled by poor Asian's community who keep enjoying their lives despite of the circumstances. It's filled with Asian Culture In it's restaurant, market, and medicine store.

Aside from the venues for the chess tournaments, and except for the personal lodging wherever the Jongs live, their neighborhood is that the central setting for this story and its hospitable, vivacious sense of cultural happiness is crucial for Waverly, her brothers, and her mother.
