Why did Cronus eat his children?

Cronus had been told a prophecy that he would be overthrown by one of his own children. Fearing the loss of his power, he decided to eat all of his children (and a rock Zeus), like any sensible parent would.

He was afraid that one of them would eventually become strong enough to overthrow him and take his power.
