How has Gertrude changed since arriving in Johannesburg? Influenced by the crime in Johannesburg, Gertrude has become a violent and cruel person, taking advantage of others to improve her own situation. Witnessing the injustice of the city, Gertrude became politically active, protesting the oppressive South African government. Since moving to the city, Gertrude has become a more mature person, renouncing the wild behavior of her youth and living by more traditional values. After arriving in Johannesburg, Gertrude became a criminal in order to survive, prostituting herself and selling illegal liquor.
