Why have there been protests around the nation centered on "black lives matter"?

It is hard to not make this answer subjective. My best friend is black and he and I think quite similarly on the subject. I think there has been a scar on this country from all the racial discrimination, however I think the "black lives matter" is more a plea for attention.
