Upon his death in 1896, Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite, bequeathed the equivalent of $4.7 million (at the time of this publication) to create awards that would be his ultimate legacy. Every year the revered Nobel Prizes are given on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death.
