A connotation is an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning. An example of it would be "discipline". It has an unhappy connotation of punishment.
A denotation is a literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests. Shrewed literally means having good judgment but has a negative connotation.

Positive and Negative Connotations ... For example, the words childish, childlike and youthful have the same denotative but different connotative meanings. Childish and childlike have a negative connotation as they refer to immature behavior of a person. Whereas, youthful implies that a person is lively and energetic.
Denotation Examples. Denotation refers to the literal, dictionary definition of a word. Many of the words that we use also have feelings and emotions that are associated with them, and this is called connotation ... Shrewd-literally means "having good judgment," but has a negative connotation.
