Which is correct pronoun

Each of the airplanes had begun (its, their) descent from the sky.

The mayor did (their, his) best to solve the traffic problem.

    Sometimes you just have to say the sentences to yourself to see what sounds right, and that only works sometimes, but I do believe that the correct answers are "its" and "his"
