The Weird Sisters' prophecy for Macbeth and Banquo functions as a trigger of all Macbeth's inner demons' work. Macbeth, as a character, craves the king's crown, but lacks courage to admit it or do anything on his own to get it. He is able to actually act only once he heard the prophecy. While listening to it, he is transforming. Banquo notices this transformation and asks him: "Good sir, why do you start and seem to fear / Things that do sound so fair?" (Act I, Scene 3) In this very dramatic scene, Macbeth is afraid not of the witches and their uncanny foresight, but of his own thoughts. Without this scene, the drama wouldn't be able to unveil.
