Read the stanza from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls." Darkness settles on roofs and walls, But the sea, the sea in the darkness calls: The little waves, with their soft, white hands, Efface the footprints in the sands, And the tide rises, the tide falls. No single word, but the general sense of rhythm caused by repetition ("the sea, the sea"; "the tide, the tide"). Of course since the subject of the passage is "darkness" the word "settles" is critical to establish that the darkness is peaceful and not frightening.
