Why does jim hawkins (from treasure island), believe Ben Gunn may be an ally?

Jim believed Ben might be an ally because when of the life story Ben told him when they first met. Jim believes Ben when he said that he now fears god after spending three years alone in the island and that he will no longer return to his pirate life/ways.
