In "Broken Chain", The story focuses on Alfonso, the main character, who finds himself wanting to change the way his teeth are to look better, while in "Fish Cheeks" the main character, Amy Tan, wants to change her physical appearance to impress the ministers son. The common theme of both stories is that appearance isn't everything when it comes to impressing someone or looking necessarily "good".
