So they've survived a trip. It was a fearful and a scary one. The ship had many close-calls, nearly shipwrecking many times. But the prize is won - they reached their goal. And now the end is near, and people are celebrating their safe arrival home. The ship is grim and daring. Daring because they are/were daring. And grim because now in rough condition. But the captain himself is dying. He hasn't survived. And so the speaker addresses his own heart ...

He's bleeding. He has fallen. He's cold and dead. Cold means he didn't die recently.
