What is the difference between a packet and protocol?

In the world of Information Technology, these two are closely related and, in fact, work hand in hand.

Packet is a unit of data that is routed from the sender to the receiver's end. Usually this happens when a file from the sender is sent to the receiver. The file becomes packet data for easier sending. Then, the receiver receives the file packet by packet until the file is complete. Protocols, on the other hand, are responsible for filtering these packets so as they aren't mixed up with the others that might result to a corruption of a file. They are set of rules that specify interactions.
