The whole poem is in free verse, much like Whitman's poetry was, as Ginsberg sees himself as Whitman's literary son (and this poem shows that). In this particular line, the free verse allows the imaginary Whitman to ask the grocery boys questions, as if they were all in a classroom. This supermarket seems to be the essence of America: it's a history and a poetry class at the same time. The free verse also adds to the conversational tone of the poem.
