The priest understands that the traditional beliefs the Pueblo people are going to be hard to change. The priest gives in to Leon's requests because by ignoring them he would further ostracize himself from the tribe and have a harder time continuing to spread his religion. By attending the ceremony and contributing to it, he is showing respect for the Pueblo traditions and the people.
