What event drove the Ganguli family to reside in America?

It was when Ashoke, the main character of the story, met an elder man as he boarded the train. They conversed about books and traveling outside the borders of India and this elder inspired him to wander. Being the lone survivor of the train wreck, the conversation between him and the old man awoke him to change the course of his life and to travel.
