In this quote, it is possible to find an example of metaphor "well-nigh crushed and smothered under its load." It might make reference to a person affected by bad lack, it portrays the state of mind in which a person can be "immortal soul".

On the other hand, a hyperbole can be spotted in "one hundred acres of land." It might be said that if a person is smothered under a heavy load, he/she would not 'push acres of land or barns'
