Why is Parris so upset at the beginning of Act One?

    Parris is upset because of his daughter and slave. His daughter isn't doing well and his slave has been accused of witchcraft. While he doesn't necessarily believe these accusations, he knows he will get caught up in the middle of it and have to deal with these accusations sooner or later.
