Why does Matt's father leave the rifle rather than the matchlock for Matt to use?

    Matt and his father had traveled to their holding in Maine territory to build a house and get some crops planted before bringing the rest of the family over. Matt's mother is pregnant, and for her comfort and safety, she and Matt's younger sister stayed behind at their home in Massachusetts. The plan is that when Matt and his father have prepared their holding so that the basic amenities of shelter and food would be available.
