In this Lincoln speech, he was emphasizing both pathos and ethos by giving a message of hope. It had ethos characteristics by motivating the public that any citizen can overcome the trials the Union war caused. It had pathos characteristics because Lincoln's words uplifted the public to believe there are better days yet. He did not allude to any legal document. He also saw the public as fighters thus did not allude to address the military.
