Review the claim Joshua makes, as well as the reasoning he cites to support it.

The funding of the public library should be protected because the library offers important programs and services that benefit the whole community. According to Library Director Sarah Tomlinson, whom I interviewed on May 6, the budget cuts will force the library to discontinue many popular programs and services.

Is Joshua's reasoning sound?

A. Yes, Joshua's reasoning is sound because he has adopted the position of a knowledgeable expert.

B. Yes, Joshua's reasoning is sound because it uses a valid source to show that the library will have to cut services that benefit the entire community.

C. No, Joshua's reasoning is not sound because he hasn't asked every member of the community whether they use library services.

D. No, Joshua's reasoning is not sound because Sarah Tomlinson is not an expert on library funding.

    The correct answer is B.

He is not an expert, nor has he adopted the position of one. However, by interviewing the Library Director, he is using a valid source who knows that the library will have to cut services that benefit the entire community. It would not be necessary for him to interview every member of the community, since the Library Director, who is an expert on funding, is in a position to know.
