    Mexico was built on an old lake that was drained to provide land for the city. Water is continually pumped out of underground aquifers to prevent flooding and to provide drinking water. This makes the soil compact, causing the city to sink. The city has sunk about 30 feet in the last 100 years. As a result, buildings often shift, and ceilings and walls may crack. Sewer lines and water pipes have been damaged heavily. along with the population constantly needing to fix the damage.
