Powerful drug cartels influence Mexico’s government through corruption in government. For example, cartels bribe government and police officials to ignore crimes. They also bribe attorneys and judges. Those who refuse to accept bribes have been threatened or even killed. Journalists who have exposed corruption also have been threatened or killed.
