In other words, where there is a fault between the two blocks, inclined away from the left block, and the 'hanging' side moves down, this is a normal fault. If the 'hanging' side moves up relative to the other block, then it is a reverse fault. The Front Ranges of the Canadian Rockies are underlain by major reverse faults that put older rock on top of younger.
