Pop density = #people per unit of land area.

So because the country is small, more people are crammed into a smaller amount of land, which increases the density.

I have learned that population density expresses the relationship between the number of people who live in a place and the area of the place. Based on this knowledge, Great Britain's high population density can be explained by the high number of people who live there, combined with the relatively small physical size of Great Britain.
