    Seafloors consist of oceanic crust. This crust is denser and heavier than its continental counterpart and sinks underneath the continental crust at subduction zones.

    The rocks are melted in the upper mantle, and some are then expelled through volcanic activity, hot spots, or lava flows. The chemistry of the rocks change after being melted and when they reemerge they are lighter than when they were first subducted.
