The Marcellus is a large area in the eastern part of the USA. Natural gas is extracted here through fracking or hydraulic fracturing. This is a process in which water at high pressure is injected into a drilled holes thereby creating holes in the rocks housing the gas and petroleum and sending them into a well.

While fracking provides natural gas, a cleaner source of energy than coal, fracking has some environmental costs such as ground water contamination and the risk of setting off earthquakes.
