Core is the innermost part of the earth that contains mainly iron and nickel in molten form (under very high temperature and pressure). The density of core is higher than mantle. Because of presence of iron and nickel, it produces a magnetic field around the earth.

This magnetic field forms the magnetosphere of the Atmosphere and this protects the Earth from the Sun flares and the Solar winds from the Sun. Had this magnetosphere been absent the Earth could have been burnt.
