Well if you are talking about plates it would be because in the mantle under the crust of the Earth, the magma that is warmer moves towards the surface and the cooler magma moves closer is pushed closer to the core by the warmer magma. This is called convection. When the warmer magma gets to the surface, the plates are pushed by the moving magma. When two plates are pushed together and collide they cause earthquakes or tsunamis depending on the strength of the impact and the location of it on the planet.
