Why do you think certain regions are more prone to experience earthquakes?

    Answer: Certain regions sit on top of or closer to faults in the earth. So as the plates shift places on top of and around it get earthquakes.

    Think of it like two wooden benches rubbing against each other. Extend this example to continental plates. The friction and sudden release of stored elastic energy leads to earthquakes.

    Volcanically active places are also prone to earthquakes as the Hawaiian Islands are. This happens mostly due to the movement of superheated magma and gases moving under the crust in such places.

    Places far from such tectonic settings are therefore much more stable and are seldom associated with earthquakes. But that does not necessarily mean they will never be associated with quakes sometime in the future. New faults may develop and change the scenario.
