    The fold type in which the oldest rock layer is at the center of the fold is described as an anticline. An anticline young outwards from the core of the fold and the youngest layer is the most outward one.

    When tectonic forces buckles a sedimentary rock sequence in an area and tension is created, the sequence folds with the youngest layer projecting outward and the oldest at the center of the fold.

    A syncline on the other hand has its youngest layer at its center and the oldest layer is outward. We say the rock layers becomes older from the core of the fold.
