    C. mountain

    E. coastal plains

    Explanation:

The hiker first starts his journey along he costal plains, which has low elevation (because it's near sea level) and low relief. Then he climbs up ... to each a peak.

We don't know how long it took him to reach the peak, at the end of the climbing phase, but there's a mention he climbs up steeply ... so that's the indication it was most likely a mountain, because the sides of a hill are not very abrupt, it's more like a slow climb.

He didn't hike on the interior plains because he was near the sea ... and a plateau is a flat area in altitude. We don't know what he encountered or did at the end of the climbing.
