Why were people in the american midwest able to buy such large farms

    People in the Midwest were able to get such big lands because of two reasons:

    1. The prices of the land dropped significantly because the owners were just interested to convert their big properties to cash.

    2. The government started giving the land for free to the people if they farm it for 5 years in continuity.
