Why do earth scientists think that rigid slabs of the lithosphere are descending into the mantle near the tonga islands?

    Near to the Tonga Island on the sea depths lies the Tonga trench, which is a focalized limit. At the Tonga trench, the Pacific plate is subducting underneath the Australian-Indian plate, sending chunks of the Pacific plate into the mantle.
