There were many reasons as to why the Americans declared war on Britain in 1812. To start, there was the impressment of American soldiers from Britain. Impressment of sailors was the act of the British Royal Navy of sending officers to board American ships in the English Channel, inspecting the crew, and seizing soldiers accused of deserting British ships. On top of that, it was seen that the British government had little respect for the United States and actively tried to meddle or entirely suppress the trade relationships between America and other European nations. There was also continual harassment of American commerce by British warships during this. The hostility went so far as to a British frigate HMS Leopard upon the USS Chesapeake in 1807. This would nearly trigger a war.
