    overseas trade required large ships, ans was important for brining in imports of goods and raw materials, and exporting them as well. several key British ports, including the hub of the nation in London, had been growing on trade has built public buildings. As the revoulation got underway and Britian experienced an export boom in the late eighteen century, wealth was reinvested in refurbising ports and they expanded greatly.

    The two major reasons were the transport of goods and waste disposal. It was much easier to transport the goods via boat down the river as they were much bigger and could transfer more goods. They could do that faster than the transports on the land. Also rivers made an easy place to dump waste which led to great pollution and contamination of many rivers.
