The Aswan High Dam basically made Egyptian economy rich and industrialized. However, the massive dam contributed to additional pollution. The dam stopped the deposition of nutrient rich silt in Egyptian farms, forcing farmers to use more fertilizers. More fertilizers caused the soil to become more saline, and the resulting runoff polluted the waterway and caused increased growth of algae.
