World war 2 - this book was written in 1950s so after ww2 and Golding was trying to show the divide in society is present in all not just the Germans.

He was a school teacher - he knew the lives of school boys and didn’t like the school he worked at so that could’ve influenced his anger at the boys in the novel

The novel Coral Island - he uses the same names of the characters Jack and Ralph as that book is about how perfect the boys lives are, but Golding wanted to show that they weren’t actually perfect
