Why did entrepreneurs thrive in american economic system of the late 1800's?

Laissez-faire policies, which gave entrepreneurs great latitude in hiring and payments for workers, allowed businesses to reap large gains. In addition, protective tariffs were heavily weighted against imports, so it allowed businesses to produce greater amounts of American-made goods for the domestic market.
