One of the main issues regarding slavery and the constitution was whether or not African-American slaves were considered to be people and citizens. If all men are created equal, then they as men should also be created equal. This was resolved with the 3/5ths compromise which established that slaves were 3/5ths of a man and that therefore they couldn't be free citizens of the states.
