How did hobbes and locke differ in thier views on the role of government

    Hobbes believed that absolute monarchy was the answer and people must submit to the monarch. His view was shaped by the English civil war where king john was beheaded. John Locke believed that the main purpose of government is to protect those natural rights that the individual cannot effectively protect in a state of nature.
